Sacrifice 25/1 ew Worcester 17/08/05
Steve Lewis Hamilton’s big winner really gave me confidence that I’d be able to sustain my profitable start to the year. My sister-in-law backed the horse with another SLH winner Celtic Boy (11/2) in an ew double at the same meeting. She had a return of £460.55, I was happy with my £312.50 haul.
Dorney’s Well 17/1 win Chepstow 25/02/06
Another big Steve Lewis Hamilton winner that brought an end to a shaky run in style. Mairi doubled it with SLH selection New Entic (7/1) to outsmart me with a £623.40 haul. Again, I happily made do with a profit of £240
Scotty’s Future 9/1 win Beverley 19/04/2006
Not The Mathematician’s biggest winner but certainly his finest hour tipping-wise. This notoriously unreliable horse described as ‘a rogue’, ‘a mule’ and ‘a miserable dog’ in Guy’s eccentric race write-up nonetheless had his day, returning a profit of £168.75 3
Most Painful Bets
Boteen 2/1 win Lingfield 13/05/2006
Not part of the survey proper but Eamonn’s 13th of May bet must count as most macabre selection of the year. Not content with racking up a string of losers the former publican believes his patronage of the fancied Boteen may have somehow contributed to the horse’s death at the track. The news was greeted with the following observation: “You will have noticed I managed to kill a horse by tipping it on Saturday”. There’s nothing more to say really.
Hollywood 20/1 win Wincanton 02/02/06
Revelling in the soft ground conditions The Mathematician’s selection Hollywood turned over an extremely hot favourite to win at a big price. Great, you would think, except if you’ve included the horse in an e/w double with another runner that tails off miserably and finishes unplaced.
See You Sometime 10/1 win Uttoxeter 06/05/2005
Having looked the most likely winner for the whole of the final circuit our selection jumped the final fence in front establishing a length lead over a seemingly disinterested Sir Rembrandt only for the said horse to awaken from its slumbers to beat our big priced selection in a photo. Gutting.
The two that got away
Stephen Ames wins The Players 2006 Championship at 125/1 Steve Webster wins
the 2005 Italian Open at 50/1 Fantastic results – unless of course you’ve
got caught up with domestic chores and forgotten to place a bet on either
of them.
